AI Agent Infrastructure (ERC-4337 / x402)

Thesis

The autonomous AI agent economy requires two foundational primitives that currently exist but lack direct investment vehicles. ERC-4337 (account abstraction enabling AI agents to hold and operate crypto wallets without human key management) and x402 (a micropayment protocol enabling agent-to-agent economic transactions). The 1000x Opportunity Map explicitly names both as critical infrastructure. 'ERC-4337 for account abstraction, x402 for agent micropayments.' Gartner projects the autonomous agent economy at $30T by 2030. For this projection to materialize, AI agents need the ability to autonomously hold funds, sign transactions, pay for services, and interact with smart contracts. All without human intervention for each transaction. ERC-4337, which went live on Ethereum mainnet, provides the account abstraction layer. The x402 protocol enables HTTP-native micropayments, allowing AI agents to pay per API call, per inference, per data query. The investment challenge is that these are protocol standards, not individual tokens. Indirect exposure comes through projects building on top of them. Virtuals Protocol (agent deployment), Autonolas (multi-chain agent infrastructure), and potentially future projects specifically tokenizing the account abstraction or micropayment layers. Safe (formerly Gnosis Safe) is the dominant smart contract wallet and primary beneficiary of ERC-4337 adoption. OLAS agents already make 75% of Safe transactions on Gnosis Chain. This entry exists to document the structural thesis rather than a specific trade. The AI agent infrastructure stack is the 'picks and shovels' play of the AI x Crypto convergence. While individual agent platforms may rise and fall, the underlying infrastructure for autonomous agent economics will be essential regardless of which specific platforms win.
