Companies that raised hundreds of millions on the promise of bio-materials but failed to achieve commercial scale. The failure of Bolt Threads (spider silk materials), Amyris (bio-based chemicals, Chapter 11 with $1.15B debt), and Zymergen (acquired then liquidated) killed at least $1.1B in investor capital and created deep skepticism about the entire bio-materials thesis.
