Thesis
LanzaTech is the only publicly traded pure-play carbon recycling company. Its LanzaJet Freedom Pines Fuels plant (Soperton, GA) began operating in November 2025. The world's first commercial-scale ethanol-to-jet sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) plant. A genuine first, a plant that converts industrial waste gases into jet fuel at commercial scale. The financial inflection is visible in Q4 2025 licensing revenue. $16.7M versus $1.1M in Q4 2024, a 15x year-over-year jump. LanzaJet (a separate entity in which LanzaTech holds a stake) was valued at $650M. The licensing model means LanzaTech can scale revenue without proportional capital expenditure. A critical advantage for a capital-intensive industry. The SAF market is projected to reach $37B by 2030, driven by aviation decarbonization mandates in the EU (RefuelEU) and growing voluntary commitments from airlines. LanzaTech's gas fermentation technology platform can also produce ethanol, chemicals, and other products from industrial waste gases, providing revenue diversification. Key risks. LanzaTech is a small-cap with volatile trading, the SAF market depends on regulatory mandates that could change, and scaling gas fermentation to meet global SAF demand requires massive capital investment in new plants. The company remains unprofitable.
