Zymergen

Thesis
Zymergen was acquired then liquidated. Along with Bolt Threads and Amyris, it represents the synbio graveyard. Companies that raised hundreds of millions on the promise of bio-materials and computational biology but failed to deliver commercial products at scale. Zymergen IPO'd in 2021 at a $3B+ valuation, then crashed within months after revealing its flagship product was not commercially viable. Ginkgo Bioworks eventually acquired the remnants, but the value was largely destroyed. The Zymergen failure was particularly damaging because it occurred after a high-profile IPO, eroding public market trust in synbio companies. The combined failures of Zymergen, Amyris, and Bolt Threads killed at least $1.1B in investor capital and created the deep sector skepticism that now ironically benefits the survivors by suppressing their valuations. No investable action. Equity destroyed through acquisition and liquidation.
