How NEAR Intents and the AI Agent Market Are Supposed to Capture Value
NEAR's value case in 2026 rests on two products, NEAR Intents for cross-chain swaps and the AI Agent Market for autonomous agents. The pitch is that both route fees back to the NEAR token. This article maps each step of that flow and marks what is verified versus what is still a claim.
The intents flow
A user wants to swap an asset on one chain for an asset on another. Instead of bridging, they sign an intent, and solvers compete to fill it. Solvers pay for the right to fill intents, and a cut of that activity is meant to flow into NEAR buybacks. Confidential Intents launched in March 2026, and CoinDesk reported the NEAR token jumped 17% on the launch outpacing the privacy-token sector.
The mechanism is live and it processes volume. The open question is the fee take rate. Solver competition is good for users and compresses the margin the protocol captures.
The agent flow
The Agent Market lets autonomous agents pay each other for services, with NEAR as the settlement asset. The thesis is that agent-to-agent commerce scales with AI adoption, and every settlement burns or buys back NEAR. At NEARCON 2026 the team announced an Intents fee switch and expanded buyback mechanics as the core tokenomics change.
What is verified and what is not
Verified. Both products exist, transaction flows are measurable on-chain, and the March 2026 price reaction is documented by independent press. Also verified, base-chain gas fees remain small, in the low thousands of dollars daily per DefiLlama.
Not verified. The size of the buyback flow relative to the $117M annual post-halving issuance. The revenue dashboard asserts progress toward a crossover, but we found no third-party audit of the buyback ledger. If someone quotes you a buyback dollar figure, ask for the on-chain source and reconcile it yourself.
