NEAR Staking Yield Explained. What 43.7% of Supply Staked Means for Your APY

EarlyThunder Research|

NEAR has 571.4M tokens staked out of roughly 1.31B in circulation. That is a 43.7% stake rate, pulled from NEARBlocks mainnet stats and cross-checked against live validator stake queries on 18 September 2026. Most staking guides quote an APY without telling you the mechanics behind it. This one does the arithmetic.

Where the yield actually comes from

Validator rewards come from protocol inflation, not from fees. In 2025 the chain paid validators at a max inflation of 5% per year. The community approved an upgrade, shipped in nearcore 2.9.0, that cuts max inflation to 2.5% and rebalances rewards toward small validators and veNEAR holders. Fewer new tokens, same nominal staking participation, so the per-token yield drops unless demand grows.

The Bitwise NEAR Staking ETP on Xetra reports a 3.08% net staking yield after fees. That number is your realistic baseline. Anything marketing 8%+ NEAR yields is either pre-halving data or a leveraged product.

Why the stake rate floor matters

NEAR targets 90% of supply staked at the protocol level. Actual participation sits near 44%, less than half the target. Two implications follow from that gap.

First, inflation is diluted across fewer stakers than the design assumed, which props up the per-validator yield for now. Second, the gap is a standing sell-pressure reserve. Unstaked NEAR is liquid NEAR, and 750M liquid tokens on a $4.7B market cap is real overhang.

What we would watch

The interesting number is not APY. It is the ratio of protocol fee revenue to inflation issuance. The NEAR revenue dashboard tracks buybacks against issuance, and the tokenomics upgrade leans on buybacks from Intents and AI Agent Market fees to close the gap. Until external fee revenue materially exceeds issuance, staking yield is funded by your own dilution. That is not a scam, it is just how proof-of-stake tokenomics work before fees scale. Watch the crossover, not the APY.
